About this Event

Discover the sculptural beauty of paper in a hands-on Origami & Paper Art Masterclass with Caroline Preston. This immersive one-day workshop blends traditional craft, contemporary design, and mindful creativity, offering participants the chance to explore the evolution of origami, from classic cranes to cutting-edge sculptural forms, while learning directly from Caroline’s internationally acclaimed practice.

The day begins with a shared introduction to key folds and the creation of a personal zine-style sketchbook, a handmade journal for notes, samples, and crease patterns before moving into the art of paper selection, preparation, and advanced folding techniques that transform simple sheets into expressive three-dimensional works.

Guided step by step, attendees will explore 2D–3D modelling, modular and tessellation folding, kirigami, and the challenge of reading crease patterns. Caroline provides personalised feedback throughout, helping refine each participant’s technique and creative approach. Optional insights into digital origami tools, geometric design, and professional display methods are also available for those wishing to take their practice further.

Caroline Preston is a contemporary British paper sculptor known for her intricate, folded forms that explore the interplay between transformation, harmony, and the natural world. Her practice centres around the sculptural possibilities of hand-painted and patterned papers - each piece meticulously folded, layered, and shaped into symbolic compositions. Drawing inspiration from origami traditions, sacred geometry, and elemental forms, her work spans from peace cranes and butterflies to abstracted landscapes and celestial motifs.

Caroline’s paper artworks are a meditation on balance and impermanence, evoking both the fragility and strength found in nature. Working from her studio in North Devon, she channels the textures and colours of Exmoor, Dartmoor, and the Atlantic coastline, infusing her compositions with the rhythms and palettes of seasonal change. Her visual language incorporates mandalas, spirals, and involute curves - fusing symbolism with a contemporary aesthetic.

A Fine Art graduate and Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, Caroline first discovered origami while living in Japan. She began her artistic career as an artist-in-residence at 18 and has since built a dynamic portfolio of commissioned and exhibited works. Notable collaborations include Saatchi & Saatchi’s global HSBC campaign, commissions for Apple, Virgin Atlantic, Royal Caribbean, and the Bank of England, and appearances on Channel 5’s The Saturday Show and The Handmade Fair with Kirstie Allsopp.

Her work has been shown at leading international art fairs including the British Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery, London Art Fair, Affordable Art Fair (Battersea, New York, Hong Kong), and Context Art Miami. Represented by Art Movement, Caroline’s paper sculptures are collected and exhibited worldwide.
