- **Event Description**: Join us for a celebration of the human voice featuring poetry, story-telling and singing!About this EventKIND voices is an evening of contemporary poetry, story-telling and singing at Studio KIND, bringing together a collection distinctive voices for a night of language, reflection, and connection. Join Nayomie James, Rosamund Clare, Katy Lee, Grizel Luttman-Johnson, Gabby Young and Helena Payne for an intimate gathering of words shared aloud.Please feel free to bring along your own alcoholic beverages too!Nayomie James, of Unexplored Places Theatre Co, is now living and working in North Devon, having trained and worked in London as a professional actor for over a decade. Pursuing her love of writing, Nayomie has recently engaged with Paines Plough on their three-year Tour The Writer programme, which culminated in her first full-length stage play. Now writing poetry for a spoken word event, a screenplay, a set of children's books and a panto, Nayomie decided that she should also write a new short play for The Landmark Theatre's Welcome Weekender this year. Nayomie is continuing to perform professionally as a dancer for Switchframe Scenic Dance, spoken word poet and actor, notably this year with Pleasure Dome Theatre Co again, returning to the Valley of Rocks, Exmoor.'Grizel is an artist who also writes some poems. Poetry is the little sister but they are in league.She has never found words an easy medium - there's translation from an abstract brain involved.Making a poem can still feel like lying underneath a car fixing an engine with a cold spanner. But its good when it goes.She is quite an experimental person.Helena Payne grew up between Exmoor, London and Hong Kong. She read English at the University of Exeter before training as an actor at Drama Studio London. She continues to study voice privately. As an actor, she has played Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Edmund "played with verve and brio," in LEAR, Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest, Will Doone, and Gwenny in Lorna Doone, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, and Lady Sims in The Twelve Pound Look with Pleasure Dome. Other work includes Sexism is Bad… at The Arcola, Top Girls at The Southbank Centre, Praxagora in The Assembly Women, Mrs Smith in The Bald Prima Donna at The Old Red Lion, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Guiderius in Cymbeline at the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival, The Blind/The Intruder at the Old Red Lion and its transfer to the Tabard, The Alchemist at the Riverhouse Studios, Viola in Twelfth Night and Margaret in Much Ado About Nothing at Petersfield Shakespeare Festival, and Like Enemies of the State at the Pleasance. She originated the role of Lily in Wassail's Birthday day which toured the South West supported by Arts Council England in 2024. She recorded audiobook All the Perverse Angels at Pinewood Studios.This summer she tours with Reduced Opera as Carmen in Carmen. She has toured with Heritage Opera as Mercedes in Carmen and other sung roles include Cesare in CESARE which she also adapted and co-wrote the libretto for, Amneris in Aida, Cassandra in The Trojans, Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Queen of the Fairies in Iolanthe, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, Annio in La Clemenza di Tito, Mrs Noye in Noye’s Fludde at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, and Mustardseed in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Minack Theatre where she was described as, “proving you really can do it all.” She regularly records at Abbey Road with London Cantamusica and is an experienced concert performer and recitalist. Most recently, she recorded Elgar's Sea Pictures with Berrak Dyer. She is Practitioner in residence at Wellington School and teaches privately.Studio Kind is situated at the far end of and within Barnstaple Pannier Market. During out of hours, the market can be accessed by a small wooden door from Butchers Row.Nearest Car parks are the Cattle Market car park or Barnstaple Central. There is disabled parking on Boutport Street.The bus station is a 5-minute walk away and the train station a 15-minute walk or bus journey of 10 minutes.Our venue is wheelchair friendly and accessible to all. There are accessible toilets right next door.By booking an event at Studio KIND., you agree to our cancellation policy, which states that no refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than two weeks before the event date. Refunds requested earlier will be processed minus Eventbrite booking fees. Studio KIND. reserves the right to modify or cancel events as necessary, in which case full refunds will be provided or otherwise a postponement to a later date workshop.
