Plot Summary:
Based on the hugely successful British television series this comedy relates the
adventures of Rene, a hapless café owner in occupied France.
Rene and his wife have stashed a priceless portrait stolen by the Nazis in a
sausage in their cellar, where two British airmen are also hiding until the
Resistance can repatriate them.
Communications with London using the wireless that is disguised as a cockatoo
add to the many embarrassments this intrepid proprietor endures in the
company of his patrons.
News that the Führer is scheduled to visit the town inspires tricksters disguised
as Hitler to frequent the cafe. Meanwhile, Rene summons all the wit he can
muster to save his café and his life.
Character Synopsis:
Rene: The Café owner and the lead character. Needs very good comic timing, warmth and charisma. Faux French accent.
Edith: Rene’s wife. Absurd, sings out of tune. Faux French accent.
Yvette & Mimi: Café waitresses. Need to be comfortable smooching with Rene.
Faux French accent
Michelle: Leader of the French Resistance. Faux French accent
Colonel: Faux German accent
Gruber: Faux German accent – somewhat camp – flirtatious with Rene
Alberto: Faux Italian accent. Constantly randy.
Herr Flick: Head of the local Gestapo – in love with Helga. Faux German accent
Helga: Herr Flick’s assistant. Does a strip tease at one point. Faux German accent
Officer Crabtree: is a British policeman who is posted in France. He has a terrible French accent getting vowels wrong – very comedic, played with a straight face.
Le Clerc: He is an extremely eccentric individual. He thinks he is a master of disguise, but in each of his 'get-ups' it is obvious that it is him.
Von Schmelling: German General – small role. Commanding presence.
There are many other smaller parts, some speaking and some non-speaking –
café people, two British airmen, peasants.
