It's an 18-metre-deep moss-covered chasm formed when a huge block of sandstone slipped away thousands of years ago after the last Ice Age. The cool, damp conditions mean the walls stay covered in ferns and moss throughout the year. Interesting stories: In the 15th century, persecuted Lollards (followers of John Wycliffe) are believed to have used it as a secret place of worship. Many historians also think it inspired the Green Chapel in the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. People often describe walking through it as entering another world because it's noticeably cooler and much darker than the surrounding woodland. THE ROACHES - The Roaches are one of Britain's finest gritstone escarpments. The name probably comes from the French word "rochers", meaning rocks. Fantastic views across Staffordshire, Cheshire, and on very clear days towards Snowdonia. The cliffs are internationally famous among rock climbers. Did you know.... The Birthplace of Modern Rock Climbing The Roaches are one of the most significant locations in the history of British rock climbing. In the 1950s, legendary climbers Joe Brown and Don Whillans tested their skills on these gritstone cliffs, swapping the heavy climbing boots of the era for lightweight gym shoes. Their pioneering approach redefined what climbers believed was possible and helped lay the foundations for the modern sport of rock climbing. The ridge is home to peregrine falcons, ravens and breeding upland birds. RAMSHAW ROCKS - These dramatic gritstone towers are: another renowned climbing venue, less crowded than The Roaches, full of strange weathered rock formations. HEN'S CLOUD - Hen's Cloud is a spectacular, rocky gritstone hil rising to 410 m (1,345 feet) above sea level, it is highly regarded for its panoramic views and some of the finest traditional multi-pitch crack climbs on gritstone. The Roaches ridge can be extremely exposed to wind. Water and food opportunities are limited once you're on the high ground so please bring enough to sustain you.
