Jatayu (Chennai) Jazz-Rock Fusion

Jatayu is a Jazz-Rock quartet from Chennai, India. The band weaves together instrumental Carnatic music with jazz, rock, and funk.
Jatayu is a reflection of modern India - rooted in a centuries old art form, yet current and collaborative in approach and sonic fabric.
Formed in 2016, the band has been playing local independent venues in their hometown, growing and building on their loyal fan-base.

Jatayu will be touring with their Debut EP 'Chango Tales'
This 5 track EP takes listeners through the emotional journey of the protagonist, Chango.

Some of the band's early musical influences are MJ, The Beatles, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakthi, Pantera, T.M Krishna, and more;
Some of their later influences are Herbie Hancock, Nile Rogers, Robert Glasper, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tom Misch and many others.

The text below is the Album review from The Indian Music Diaries.

The Devil Grooves To Jatayu

There are some of us who are trying to think outside the box while some are happy working within the confines it. Well, then there are bands like Jatayu who don't care about the box at all. The instrumental experimental quartet from Chennai, Jatayu released their debut EP 'Chango Tales' last week, one which breaks all constraints of getting classified into an existing genre. Marrying rock, funk, jazz, blues and carnatic music into their sound, the band achieves an almost sinister sound, one that is not only intelligent but also sublime.
If Snarky Puppy and carnatic music had a baby, and the baby grew up to be a pot head who rages, it is what Jatayu would sound like.
The 5 track EP is the epitome of how tremendous, fusion music can sound like.
The 4 piece setup comprising of Shylu Ravindran on Carnatic Guitar, Sahib Singh on Guitar, Kashyap Jaishankar on Bass Guitar, and Manu Krishnan on the Drums, puts Chennai back on the map of cities of forward thinking musicians.

You know why you shouldn't miss the EP? Because, if the devil's grooving to something today, it's probably 'Chango Tales'.

Line Up
Shylu Ravindran - Carnatic Guitar / Kanjira
Sahib Singh - Guitar
Kashyap Jaishankar - Bass
Manu Krishnan - Drums
