Design Dialogues- Designing For Culture

Presenting Design Dialogues, a series of monthly talks to engage the design community in Bangalore.

Conceptualised by designer, historian and curator Ishita U. Shah, Faculty and UNESCO Chair Coordinator, Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Design Dialogues is intended to bring trans-disciplinary practitioners together, in conversation about different aspects and ways of understanding the discipline of design. The invited guests will engage with each other’s work and approaches, but also interact with common people.

For Design Dialogues #1, we have Shama Pawar of The Kishkinda Trust and Archana Prasad of Jaaga. Through this collaborative, The Courtyard and Ishita Shah are envisaging to blur the boundaries between a public and disciplinary understanding of design, thus making design practices more accessible and popular.

Ishita Shah is a designer and historian by training and recently started exploring the idea of curating for culture. She is interested in positioning her work at the intersection of design, history and education.

Archana Prasad is a day-dreamer. She tells stories connecting the past with the future by engaging people in unexpected creative experiences. Bangalore city is her hometown and muse. She explores building collaborative communities through applied techart, design and research as the Founder-Director of Jaaga.in(www.archanaprasad.com)

Shama Pawar is the founder and managing director of The Kishkinda Trust (TKT), and has been working in the areas of conservation and social empowerment in Anegundi, Hampi for two decades. Trained in design and fine arts, Shama is also the INTACH Convenor for the Hampi-Anegundi Chapter, founder member of the Hampi Foundation, and a member of the Rural Heritage Trust, Sangeevani Co-op for Organic Farmers in Anegundi Area, and the District Tourism Council, Koppal. She has also established the Hari Dharti Rural Development Society under the TKT. These programs encompass conservation of the environment, town planning with heritage component, adaptive reuse of traditional houses and using these restorations as business incubators, and raising awareness through education, arts and culture.
