RAZA’s performances are a rare opportunity to experience live, authentic Hasidic nigunim (melodies) sung by women. The group’s recent debut album, Kapelya, reflects Raskin’s deep personal connection to Chabad nigunim and their role in spiritual and communal healing. Ensemble members for the concert include Rabbi Deborah Sacks Mintz (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Eleonore Weill (kaval, vocals), Jessie Reagen (cello, vocals), and Maya Cohen (percussion, vocals). Chana Raskin, the founder and main facilitator of RAZA, is an untrained vocalist who grew up entrenched in the world of Chabad Hasidut and its stirringly simple and complex melodies. These nigunim have carried her at every point on her journey. At age four, waking up to a late-night farbrengen (Hasidic gathering) in her family’s small Brooklyn apartment, she found her way to her father’s knee as he was teaching an old Yiddish Chabad nigun. That nigun, “Ah Shtarker Bistu,” appears on RAZA’s debut album, Kapelya. In her music and song circles, Chana strives to hold a space with others recovering from illness or traumatic injury, or simply seeking Home. She revels in the healing powers of quiet, laughter, humming, singing, and movement. While the Museum building is closed for capital construction and JMM prepares to reopen to the public, Jewish life continues to be activated on the Museum’s Herbert Bearman campus–the concert will be held in B’nai Israel Synagogue, one of the historic synagogue buildings within the Museum’s care. Kosher refreshments will be served indoors. Masks are recommended, but not required for this event. Complimentary masks will be available at the event.
