Film, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT Presenter Bio: Dr. Roy Film is an assistant professor in the entry-level DPT program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science (PTRS) where he teaches primarily in the areas of orthopedic PT, manual therapy, chronic pain, and evidence-based practice. Roy’s interests focus on the conservative management of pain and musculoskeletal conditions. His personal mission is to help elevate the clinical practice of physical therapists throughout the spectrum by teaching entry-level PT students, residents, fellows, and practicing clinicians. Roy has been a recipient of the PTRS Faculty of the Year Award three times and the Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award twice. Dr. Film has long been active within the physical therapy profession through several organizations and was the 2017 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the American Physical Therapy Association of Maryland. He is the Program Director of UMSOM’s manual therapy candidate fellowship program as well as the Academic Director for the University of Maryland Rehabilitation Network’s developing orthopedic PT residency program. He serves as a lead accreditation specialist for PT residency and fellowship programs through the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) and the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT). On campus, he serves on the UMB Faculty Senate and the SOM Diversity Advisory Committee in addition to the many departmental service roles he has played in PTRS over the years. In 2018, Dr. Film was named the national taskforce leader for increasing access to non-pharmacological pain management through the US Army Medical Command’s (MEDCOM) civilian partnership known as the National Opioid Crisis Community Summit. Course Description: This course will provide broad overviews of the rise of reported chronic pain in the United States, the pitfalls of pain management, and how care often inadvertently exacerbates patient suffering. The course will center on evidence-based biopsychosocial assessment and treatment for people suffering with chronic pain including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, the 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, and the positions of the APTA and the US Surgeon General. Instructional Methodologies: This course will be provided as a two-hour presentation in lecture format. Course Behavioral and Performance Objectives: Attendees will: Understand the non-pain-related drivers of care-seeking behavior Stratify the risk of chronicity for patients with low back pain Recognize the early transition from acute to chronic pain Select appropriate tools to screen patients for substance use disorders Understand the importance of incorporating principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy into PT practice Course Schedule: 6:00PM - 6:30PM: Registration 6:30PM - 6:45PM: The Great Syndemic Who are the people with chronic pain today?
