 What if elderhood could be the most meaningful, expansive, and joyful time of life? This was the overwhelming message author Abbie Rosner heard from older psychonauts interviewed for her newly released book, Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging. This special BPS event was created to explore this question more fully and hear from elders deeply immersed in the science and service of psychedelics. Our panel discussion will include Abbie, along with psychedelic luminaries Bill Richards, Mary Cosimano, and John Rhead, and will focus on the unique opportunities intentional use of psychedelics may offer us in older age. Come join this unique offering, whether you are an older adult or will become one someday...

Books will be available for purchase and signing. Abbie will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Indigenous Reciprocity Initiative.

Abbie Rosner is a baby boomer and writer exploring how older adults are discovering – and rediscovering – the drugs of our youth in ways that enhance the way we age. Her book (Park Street Press) is the first to document this emerging phenomenon and its vast implications at the individual and societal levels. Abbie also writes on Substack: The ELDEREVOLUTION Newsletter on Psychedelics in Older Life. Her work has been featured in Forbes, NextAvenue, Double Blind and other publications. She is based in Washington, DC.

Mary Cosimano is a licensed Master’s Social Worker and the former Director of Psychedelic Services at Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. Since 2000, she has guided over 500 psychedelic study sessions and conducted thousands of preparation and integration meetings primarily with psilocybin. She has taught, trained, and mentored therapists in varying capacities. Training for her first 100 guided sessions for psychedelic-assisted therapy was alongside Dr. Bill Richards at Johns Hopkins University. In 2017, she completed the MAPS MDMA/PTSD therapy training program. Mary has witnessed and guided hundreds of participants’ experiences, seeing transformative shifts ranging from subtle to profound.

John Rhead was born in Utah in 1945, grew up in Colorado, believes he was the first person to take LSD at Dartmouth when he was an undergraduate, got his PhD in psychology from Stanford on the hopes that it would provide him some access to the world of psychedelic research, which it did. In 1971, diploma in hand, he secured a position at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center with Bill Richards and Stan Grof. His interest and his journey continue.

William (Bill) Richards, STM, PhD, is a psychologist and author of Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experiences. Dr. Richards contributed to psychedelic research in Germany in 1963-1964; from 1967-1977 at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center; from 1999-2023 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; and currently serves as a senior advisor at Sunstone Therapies. He is well-known and highly-regarded for integrating psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy into palliative care and offering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy with Gladstone Psychiatry & Wellness in Baltimore, Maryland.
This event will be held at The Village Learning Place in the Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore City.
