About Americans Without Borders: The Radical Activists Who Fought for US Ideals Abroad While Facing Political Persecution at Home

Inspired by the story of a distant cousin, investigative journalist Julia Harte explores the rich and hidden history of American citizens who fought against imperialism and dictatorship abroad, only to be excoriated at home.

One night in 1940, a group of Stalinists opened fire on Leon Trotsky’s compound in Mexico City. In the end, the victim was not Trotsky, but his bodyguard: a young American named Sheldon Harte. For investigative journalist Julia Harte, the quest to uncover the truth about Sheldon—her father’s second cousin—was just the beginning of discovering a wider, hidden history of Americans who traveled abroad to join revolutionary liberation movements—and in return were labeled radicals by the U.S. government.

From Americans who fought in the 19th-century Greek revolution to modern-day solidarity volunteers in Palestine, Harte chronicles two centuries of Americans whose support for international causes at odds with U.S. geopolitical interests put them in their own government’s crosshairs. The surprising characters she profiles include African American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War who battled bigotry and McCarthyism upon returning home; a Jewish American woman who helped the Black Panthers establish an international wing in post-independence Algeria; a teenage activist who organized Filipinos against the repressive Marcos regime; the forgotten Native American contingent in Nicaragua’s Sandinista-Contra conflict; and many more. These figures held various ideologies and beliefs, yet each in their own way sought to fight oppression and saw their actions as grounded in American ideals of equality, self-government, and human rights. Meanwhile, U.S. officials responded to them with surveillance, blacklists, travel bans, and prosecution.

Through meticulous research and on-the-ground reporting, Harte brings her subjects to life in deeply personal detail, exploring not only their heroic sides but also the tensions between their actions and ideals. Interrogating how and why activists were branded as threats by an expanding security state, Harte asks what makes a ‘radical’. In lively narrative and rich detail, this eye-opening book reveals the long history of transnational radicalism as an irrepressibly American tradition.

How Guyana became the epicenter of anticolonial pan-African movements

Nestled between Brazil, Venezuela, and Suriname, Guyana is the third-smallest sovereign state in mainland South America, and one of its youngest. Originally a Dutch colony, Guyana remained under British rule from the late eighteenth century until gaining independence in 1966 and becoming a republic in 1970. Apart from the 1978 mass murder-suicide of cult leader Jim Jones’s followers in Jonestown, Guyana has been mostly peripheral to mainstream geopolitics. Yet for a generation of Black revolutionaries from around the world, Guyana was a vibrant site of pan-African activism. The country was particularly attractive to veterans of the US civil rights movement who sought alternative places to construct flourishing postcolonial, pan-African nation-states.

In this first, comprehensive history of Guyana’s core role in anticolonial, Black internationalist movements in the 1960s and 1970s, historian Russell Rickford traces the history of African Americans who traveled to the country to work with, learn from, and teach Guyanese politicians, activists, and other international figures in the long fight for Black freedom. With encouragement from Prime Minister Forbes Burnham, they eagerly accepted the invitation to move to Guyana to establish new cooperative settlements. Rickford compellingly narrates Guyana’s allure and promise for Black Americans, along with the limitations they faced when ideology clashed with lived realities—especially political ones—once there.

Julia Harte is an investigative reporter in New York City. For the past decade, she has covered U.S. national affairs and the Justice Department for Reuters. Her writing has also appeared in publications including Harper's Magazine, The Nation, Slate, National Geographic, The Center for Public Integrity, and Lapham's Quarterly.

An associate professor of history at Cornell University, Russell Rickford specializes in African American political culture after World War II, the Black Radical Tradition, and transnational social movements. His latest book, A Proxy Africa: Guyana, African Americans, and the Radical 1970s, was released by the University of North Carolina Press in 2026. His previous monograph, We Are an African People: Independent Education, Black Power, and the Radical Imagination, received the 2016 Hooks Institute National Book Award and the 2017 OAH Liberty Legacy Foundation Award.
