The 4th annual Phil Rooney CCÉ Traditioanl Music Weekend. Celebrating traditional Irish music over a three-day programme of events which will include trad sessions, singing sessions, set dancing, concert night, music workshops plus lots more.The Trad Music Workshops take place on Saturday 31st January '26 in Colaiste Cholmcille school.We have some very talented musicians lined-up as tutors this year including Jason McGuinness (Fiddle), Kate Gavin (Fiddle), Eoghan Maguire (Banjo), Séamus Tiernan (Accordion), Marianna Tieran (Concertina), Kathryn Tiernan (Traditional Singing), Lorraine McGuinness (Flute/Whistle).1 1.30am - 1pm | Workshop1 pm | Break1 .30pm - 2:30pm | Workshop2:30pm - 3pm | Student Trad SessionAvailable Classes:Tin Whistle/FluteFiddleConcertinaAccordionBanjo/MandolinTraditional SingingOur classes do not cater for beginner level. He is a graduate of Maynooth University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Geography and History, and most recently a Professional Master of Education.In 2016, Jason became the first Sligo fiddler since 1970 to win the prestigious Fiddler of Dooney competition, followed by the Ed Reavy International Senior Fiddler title in 2018. He has performed on Comhaltas tours of Ireland, Britain and Canada (2011–2012), and toured Germany and France in 2019. He completed the Comhaltas TTCT teaching diploma in 2019.Jason has achieved significant success at county, provincial and All-Ireland Fleadhanna, including All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band titles with Glór na dTonn, All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Fleadhfest (2021), Senior Slow Airs titles, Senior Drums (2015), Senior Duet (with his brother Damien on button accordion), Senior Grúpa Ceoil, and U18 Céilí Band titles. He is also a Siansa Gael Linn winner with his group Teaspach.From a young age, Jason has shown a deep interest in researching and collecting recordings and archival material of Irish traditional musicians. He has a particular passion for the Sligo fiddle style and extensive knowledge of tune history and céilí band traditions. Jason is actively involved with Comhaltas branches nationwide, including Tireragh CCÉ, Sligo, and Leixlip CCÉ, Kildare, and is a music tutor at Maynooth University.FIDDLE: Kate Gavin https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events10/banners/280fcda0-e2f3-11f0-820b-e5e04fbe28e9-rimg-w715-h740-dc322f2e-gmir.jpg Kate is a singer, fiddle player and harpist from Sligo town. An All-Ireland champion musician, she is a member of Glór na dTonn Céilí Band, the 2025 All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band champions. She has performed extensively at home and abroad in both solo and group settings, appearing across Europe, Africa and the United States. Kate has played at many high-profile events for distinguished audiences, including performances for the President of Ireland, the Taoiseach and Irish ambassadors. In 2024, she was awarded the Mícheál Ó hEidhin medal and holds the Comhaltas TTCT diploma in traditional music teaching. Kate currently attends Trinity College Dublin and is entering her final year studying History and Politics.FLUTE/WHISTLE: Lorna McGuinness https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events10/banners/2887bcc0-e2f3-11f0-820b-e5e04fbe28e9-rimg-w1200-h673-dce6e6e6-gmir.jpg Lorna hails from Dromore West, County Sligo, and is a highly accomplished multi-instrumentalist, playing flute, tin whistle, piano, harp and céilí drums. She is a prizewinner at County, Connacht and All-Ireland Fleadhanna, and has received numerous awards, including the John McKenna Overall Musician Award and the Dr John Stafford Flute Award. Lorna completed the Comhaltas TTCT Irish Traditional Music teaching course and was awarded the Mícheál Ó hEidhin medal for achieving distinction in the SCT Grade 8 music examination. She has performed widely on national and local stages, as well as on television and radio. In 2018, Lorna received Gradam na nÓg in recognition of her dedication and voluntary work with Comhaltas. She was a finalist in Siansa Gael Linn 2016 at the National Concert Hall with the Sligo group Sáile, and has also been a prizewinner at Scór na nÓg.Accordion: Séamus Tiernan https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events5/banners/28b75840-e2f3-11f0-b1e5-fb8d04c0193d-rimg-w948-h740-dc1d1a08-gmir.jpg Séamus Tiernan, from Achill Island in County Mayo, is a highly accomplished multi-instrumentalist, playing button accordion, melodeon and guitar, and is also an acclaimed traditional English singer. In 2019, he won the prestigious Senior Button Accordion competition in Drogheda and, in the same year, founded the céilí band Glór na dTonn, which went on to win the All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band title in 2025 in Wexford. Séamus also holds the Senior Melodeon title, which he won in 2017.Séamus has toured extensively with internationally renowned productions including Rhythm of the Dance, Danceperados of Ireland and Celtic Rhythms, performing throughout Asia, Scandinavia, Europe and the United States. Marianna is a regular tutor at music and Irish-language workshops and summer schools nationwide.
