Accidental Counsellor - April 4
For Ballarat Volunteers
Regardless of where you work or volunteer, it is highly likely that at some time you will encounter emotionally distressed or challenging people.
Accidental Counsellors are people who find themselves in a ‘counselling’ role because of conversations or interactions with clients, colleagues, friends or others.
The Accidental Counsellor workshop aims to provide you with a range of practical and effective skills to be able to appropriately respond to and support people when they are angry, distressed, or experiencing a challenging time.
You will learn to
Recognise signs of people needing emotional support
Improve communication and active listening skills
Use techniques relevant to your role (engagement, building rapport, questioning and summarising)
Respond to aggressive or distressed people in crisis
Maintain professional boundaries
Develop self-care strategies
