𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲
Baldwin Woods is one of the last large remnants of native woodland in northeast Kansas. Before Euro-American settlement, the area covered nearly 3,700 acres of forest and savanna. Today, only a portion remains. 

The Baldwin Woods Forest Preserve protects part of this historic ecosystem, recognized as a National Natural Landmark. Scientific studies are done with as little disturbance as possible and access is limited so as not to damage the sensitive ecosystem. The KU Field Station stewards 396 acres across several tracts, including the Rice Woodland, home to the new trail.

Purchased in 1972 with support from the Ethel and Raymond F. Rice Foundation, the Rice Woodland is a diverse eastern deciduous forest. Over 30 tree species and 20+ shrubs and vines have been documented here, making it one of the most species-rich native forests in the region.
