Joseph McCoy from Maghera and the Maghera Heritage and Cultural Center presenting Charles Thompson. Charles Thomson (often spelled Thompson) was the first and only Secretary of the Continental Congress. Because he was the Secretary and not an elected delegate, his actual signature appears only on the initial July 4th, 1776, printing of the document, attesting to John Hancock's signature.Biography & Key ContributionsRole in the Revolution: He was known as the "Sam Adams of Philadelphia" and served as Secretary of the Continental Congress for its entire existence from 1774 to 1789.The Declaration of Independence: On July 4, 1776, only Thomson and John Hancock signed the first official broadside (printed copy) of the Declaration to prove it was passed. When the famous handwritten engrossed copy (which features all the delegates' signatures) was created later in the summer, Thomson was not asked to sign it.The Great Seal: Congress tasked him with creating a design for the Great Seal of the United States, and he submitted the approved design of the American bald eagle in 1782.
