The Story of the Scottish Lighthouse Service!

Join us at The McKechnie Institute for a fascinating talk by Dr Barry Miller, exploring the development and evolution of the Northern Lighthouse Board. The talk will highlight major technological innovations in lighthouse design and operation across the organisation’s 250‑year history.

The Ailsa Craig Lighthouse, established as a gas‑powered station in the 1880s, features prominently in this story. After a career in science research and education, Dr Miller joined the Northern Lighthouse Board as the Retained Lightkeeper for Ayrshire and Galloway, a role he has held for over 20 years. Originally from Garlieston and now living in Kirkcolm, Barry is almost certainly the only person who currently has Ailsa Craig listed as an official workplace.

Operational lighthouses in Galloway include Heston Island, Little Ross, Mull of Galloway, Crammag Head, Corsewall and Loch Ryan, while the Ayrshire coast is home to Ailsa Craig, Turnberry and Lady Island.
