Learn more about volunteering with our organization!About this EventOn Campus Volunteer Staff Program:Since its beginning, the Avian Conservation Center and The Center for Birds of Prey has relied on Volunteer Staff members to carry out its mission of providing medical treatment for injured birds of prey and shorebirds, presenting educational programs to thousands of people throughout the state, and conducting avian research and field studies that benefit South Carolina and the entire nation.Whether working with the public on our injured bird hotline, helping injured wild birds of prey or shorebirds in the Avian Medical Clinic or with resident birds in the Education Department, extensive training and experience are critical to your success. A progressive training program, including educational workshops, hands-on experience and one-on-one mentor shadowing enable Volunteer Staff members to increase their knowledge and expand skills on a continuing basis. There are many different areas in which you can serve, whether you like to work with the public or prefer to work behind the scenes. You will be able to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors, school groups and community organizations. This upcoming orientation will be focused on current availability in our Education/Husbandry department, Avian Medical department, Injured Bird Hotline (Dispatch) department, Development deparment, and Guest Services.Volunteer Commitment:-Attend Orientation and Basic Training-Submit all required paperwork-Interview with desired department-Participate in a minimum of three to four sessions of one-on-one mentor training-Commit to a set schedule of at least one 4-hour shift per week for six consecutive months-Regular attendance at Quarterly Volunteer Staff Training-Participate in at least one Adopt-a-highway per yearFrequently Asked Questions:Do I need to fill out any paperwork?Yes, in advance of attending any orientation session, we will email all pre-registered attendees several documents that will need to be completed before they can be considered for a volunteer placement. These documents include an application, liability waiver, social media agreement, and volunteer commitment agreement. How old do you have to be to volunteer at the Center? You must be 18 years or older to volunteer in the Avian Medical Clinic and 16 years or older to volunteer in all other departments. For more information about internships and service-learning opportunities, send us an email with your questions info@thecenterforbirdsofprey.orgDo Volunteer Staff have to commit to a set schedule or number of hours? We require all on-campus volunteers to commit to one four-hour shift each week for a minimum of six months. What if I want to help, but cannot commit to a set schedule?Consider joining us as a Transport Volunteer. These volunteers work within their own geographic area and, after receiving instruction in the principles and techniques essential to the safe capture and transport of injured birds of prey and some shorebirds, they are responsible for bringing injured birds to the Avian Medical Clinic from throughout the state. We host separate training sessions for new Transport Volunteers each year, so if you decide that your preference would be to assist the Center in this manner, please email info@thecenterforbirdsofprey.org so we can give you information about the next training session.Do you have to know about birds to volunteer at the Center? No, but you will learn a lot while working with us! All we require from you is a desire to make a difference through your committed volunteer service.

"description": "For nearly 30 years the Avian Conservation Center has worked to identify and address vital environmental issues through avian medicine, research, education programs, and conservation initiatives. The Center has three primary operating departments that work together to support this goal: the Center for Birds of Prey, the Avian Medical Clinic, and the South Carolina Oiled Bird Treatment Facility. The Center is located just 16 miles north of downtown Charleston in Awendaw, which is part of the Bulls Bay Historic Passage, a relatively undeveloped and pristine natural area that includes parts of Cape  Romain National Wildlife Refuge and Francis Marion State Forest. The Center’s large public facility, aptly namedWingswood, allows visitors the opportunity to experience birds of prey in a natural setting and to learn more about avian science and environmental conservation. The Center’s public facility is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays allowing visitors access to one of the nation’s largest and most diverse collections of live birds of prey including eagles, owls, falcons, and more!Since its beginning in 1991, the Center has relied on Volunteer Staff to assist in carrying out its mission of providing medical treatment for injured birds, presenting educational programs to thousands of individuals each year, and conducting avian research and field studies. Our volunteers are as integral to our operations as are the birds themselves. It is only through the sharing of their time, experience, and passion for conservation that we are able to further our mission."
