Sign up when you arrive to perform in the open mic!About this EventWe're continuing our monthly open mic series at Communities for Recovery!The evening opens with a conversation with Valerie Milburn, former member and Chair of the Board of Directors for Communities for Recovery and co-creator and co-host of the award-winning podcast Mental Health: Hope and Recovery.As a volunteer, Valerie led recovery meetings at Austin State Hospital and other hospitals and treatment centers for more than a decade, and she continues to advocate for mental health through frequent presentations to law enforcement agencies and other audiences throughout Central Texas. Through her podcast, Valerie shares her journey of struggle, crisis, and recovery from substance use disorder and bipolar disorder. Her awards include honors from both the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Central Texas and NAMI Texas, as well as the Presidential Service Award.For the first 45 minutes of the event, Valerie will sit down with our MC to share her story and take questions from the audience.The second half is yours. We'll open the mic to anyone who signs up to perform or share poetry, music, storytelling, spoken word, whatever moves you. This is a space to express yourself, support each other, and celebrate creativity and recovery. Everyone who signs up gets 7 minutes. Want to perform? Sign up at the front desk when you arrive.
