This special event invites guests into a powerful cinematic experience that interrogates justice, accountability, and the moral courage required to challenge systems of power—values that sit at the very heart of Barbara Jordan’s life and legacy.Following the screening, Director Angela Tucker will join Iliana Sosa, an award-winning director and professor in the Moody School of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin, for an intimate fireside chat exploring the impact of film on policy, public narrative, and civic engagement. Together, they will examine how storytelling functions as a force for cultural and political change, and how visual media can shape public understanding of leadership, justice, and accountability.The conversation will also reflect on the life and legacy of Barbara Jordan, drawing connections between her unwavering commitment to integrity in public service and the role of film in preserving, interrogating, and advancing democratic values. This private screening and dialogue offer a meaningful opportunity to engage film not only as art, but as a powerful tool for advocacy and social transformation—honoring three decades of the Barbara Jordan National Forum’s mission to inspire courageous leadership at the intersection of culture, policy, and public service.Location will be DMC 2.106- Moody AuditoriumTHE FILMMAKERSAngela TuckerAngela Tucker is an EmmyⓇ Award-winning producer of Belly of the Beast. Past directorial work includes All Skinfolk Ain’t Kinfolk, Black Folk Don’t, and (A)Sexual. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a recipient of Film Independent’s Amplifier Fellowship and a Chicken and Egg 2023 Award.Iliana Sosa, an Austin-based filmmaker hailing from El Paso, Texas, was raised by Mexican immigrant parents. Her work has screened at numerous festivals including SXSW, Full Frame, Camden, Morelia, and the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC. Sosa has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and residencies from institutions including Firelight Media, Sundance Institute, Berlinale Talents, True False/Catapult Rough Cut Retreat, Logan Nonfiction Program, and Jacob Burns Film Center. Sundance, the Ford Foundation, Warner Media OneFifty, the SFFILM Rainin Grant, the Austin Film Society, and Field of Vision have generously supported her work. Her debut feature, "What We Leave Behind," distributed by Ava DuVernay's ARRAY Releasing, garnered two jury awards at SXSW 2022 and earned the distinction of a New York Times "Critic's Pick," currently available on Netflix. Recognized as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2020 and one of DOC NYC’s “40 Under 40” in 2021, Sosa continues to make significant contributions to the industry. Her latest directorial venture, "La Frontera," part of the HBO Original Documentary Trilogy "God Save Texas," premiered at Sundance 2024 and is now streaming on HBO Max. Additionally, Sosa is a member of the DGA.
