The class welcomes dancers from all backgrounds and is committed to creating an inclusive, LGBTQ+ affirming and POC-friendly learning environment.Each one-hour session includes a progressive warm-up, foundational rudiments, technical step breakdowns, rhythmic exercises, and repertory inspired by tap legends such as Gregory Hines, Bill Robinson, Steve Condos, and others who have shaped the form. While the focus is on foundational skills, the pace and instruction are geared toward dancers with a strong movement background who are interested in developing greater precision, musicality, and confidence in tap.Ideal for professional dancers, dance educators, college dance students, and former dancers returning to the studio, this class offers both technical rigor and artistic exploration.What to bring: Tap shoes are encouraged, but slip-on tap covers over tennis shoes or regular tennis shoes are welcome. Please bring water and be ready to move.The City of Austin is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Requests for interpretation services should be made at least five days prior to the meeting or event you plan to attend.This project has been financed in part by the City of Austin's Elevate Grant Program.About The Instructor: Jessica Gray began dancing at the age of two in Rowlett, Texas. Throughout her youth, she trained extensively in both studio and school settings, performing with competitive dance teams, her high school drill team, and in theatre and musical productions.Jessica earned her BFA in Dance from The University of Texas at Austin in 2015. During her studies, she had the opportunity to perform works by renowned choreographers including Robert Battle, Paul Taylor, Charles O. Anderson, Kate Watson-Wallace, and Mark Morris. She also choreographed numerous student works and presented her own choreography as a senior member of Dance Repertory Theatre.Following graduation, Jessica joined Dance Waterloo and has been a core company member for the past nine seasons. In addition to performing, she has contributed as a choreographer and member of the organization's administrative team. Jessica has taught dance throughout the Austin area and currently teaches at House of Dance and Dance Xplosion.
