“Raw & Wriggling: Return of the Screwworm” by Stavana Strutz

Come learn about the horrifying scourge of New World Screwworm and what you can do to keep your animals and community safe. We will discuss the sickening biology of the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) and the past scientific discoveries and agricultural programs that successfully eradicated the pestilence decades ago.

Stavana Strutz is a disease ecologist researching how climate change affects vector-borne diseases, and a science communicator.

“Man vs. Nature: Decades of Monstrous Nature in the Movies” by Saul Ravencraft

Saul will look at the history of nature run amok in horror films. Starting with the 1950s, we’ll explore how what was showing on the big screen reflected what was happening in the bigger world.

Saul Ravencraft is an Austin-area performer, producer, and paranormal raconteur whose work blends mystery, folklore, horror, and the unexplained. He hosts live events and film programs that explore the strange, the uncanny, and the wonderfully weird.

NOTE: This show’s talks will include mentions of disease and violence.

Bonus! If you are feeling particularly spooky and nerdy, please check out the Nerd Nite Cedar Park show on Wednesday, October 13, too! Get details at https://www.instagram.com/nerdnitecedarpark/

Since COVID-19 hasn't gone away (and getting the cold/flu/crud isn't fun, either), we ask that you stay home if you aren't feeling well or have had a known exposure. We also encourage vaccination and frequent testing. Mask-wearing nerds are welcome.
