Melbourne singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist G Flip, born Georgia Flipo, fell in love with the drums as a kid and travelled the US as a touring drummer in her early 20s. Never one to sit still, Georgia then locked herself in her bedroom studio for all of 2017 and taught herself how to write and produce her own songs.
Her self-produced debut single ‘About You’ is an addictive, bittersweet shard of shimmering pop. It was the very first track Georgia pieced together, recorded in a day in her bedroom studio into “a shitty mic from the local pawn shop”.
G Flip is the real thing: unfiltered, driven and bursting out of her bedroom with ideas to burn.
Born in Baltimore and raised all over the globe (Sweden, California and New York), the half
Ghanaian, half Ugandan songstress Julia Kwamya, known as Germans, spent most of her childhood listening to a lot of Highlife music as well as feel-good 80s classics by David Bowie and Tears for Fears. She cites all of those influences as key ingredients for her own particular brand of bossa nova-infused dream pop.
Often, art is considered the safe space for dangerous ideas. JPEGMAFIA is a reminder that in a dangerous world, sometimes nowhere is safe. Operating out of Baltimore Maryland but born in New York to Jamaican parents, JPEG spent the bulk of his childhood in East Flatbush, Brooklyn – a neighborhood deeply rooted in West Indian culture and black pride – & the majority of his mid teens in deep south rural Alabama – bouncing from place to place due to rough circumstances at home & after a short stint in Pr*son due to a racially-charged altercation in his late teens, JPEG joined the military where he’d be deployed to different parts of the world, meeting fellow artists and adding new elements to his producing and rapping repertoire.
If trap music is the sound of the street, then JPEGMAFIA is trap’s subconscious; dark but not without a humor that makes things even more uncomfortable. His role as villain or satirist, hood protector or nihilist is intentionally hard to put one’s finger on. What more appropriate way to embody the frightening and confusing reality of America today?
"According to Discogs, there are 521 musical releases with the title “Pretty Baby.” From Dean Martin to Vanessa Carlton, generations of musicians have utilized the tried-and-true sweetness hardwired into the nickname. This has not gone lost on SASSY 009, an electro-pop trio from Oslo—but, unlike their predecessors, their sound here is sour and caustic. Their singing and production is frigid and trance-like; the sonic terrain they navigate is a soup of thick static that bubbles with metallic percussion and needling synth lines that dribble like droplets of mercury. Their cool voices intermingle, chanting quietly about that “pretty baby” whom they want to reach out and touch. But amid all the noise, they are distant and apparitional, like eerie voices coming from the other end of a telephone. In contradiction to its name, “Pretty Baby,” is not all that bright or charming. Rather, SASSY 009 offer a spooky yet enchanting alternative to the run-of-the-mill love song." - PITCHFORK
