Johanna Makabi is a director and producer, born in Paris with Senegalese and Congolese (DRC) origins. In 2017, she co-directed and produced her first documentary short film titled "Méduse, Afro Hair, and Other Myths." She also directed short films such as « Grace" (winner best short at Festival du film français de Aix), "Our Memory- Notre mémoire"(Atlanta Film festival, New-York African Film festival), "A Laundry day" and "Paulette et le Clown" for Netflix France. Johanna first graduated from La Sorbonne in Cinema and completed the Jean Rouch master's program in anthropology and documentary at the University of Nanterre in 2018, she also worked in casting and production, collaborating with fiction directors on projects like "Cuties" by Maïmouna Doucouré and "Winter Boy" by Christophe Honoré, among others. She joined the production department of La CinéFabrique in 2019 and became an elected member of the Collectif 50/50 in 2022, with the aim of promoting more women representation in French cinema. Following the production of various short films, including "Ne Pleure pas Halima" by Sarah Bouzi, broadcast on Arte (Winner of the Best Short Film at the Premiers Plans d'Angers festival), Johanna and her sister, Sonia Makabi, founded Sirens Films, a film production company with a focus on social and ecological impact. As producer, they won the 2023 Diversity Fund from SACD and France Télévision. Inspired by the history of the first black female students at La Sorbonne she’s co-producing and co-writing a series for France Télévision.
