Te Matapihi features refurbished Kura Kowhatu chairs designed by Carin Wilson, one of the original features of Wellington Central Library when it opened in 1991.Maurits Kelderman of designTRIBE will share insights into the redevelopment of Mangatangi Marae, including the whareiti (completed in 2006) and the wharekai, Kirihaehae (completed in 2008), reflecting on the relationships and co-design process that underpinned the project's development.—Zac Athfield grew up within the architectural practice environment in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, establishing a strong grounding in architecture. He helped open the Athfield Architects Christchurch office, joining Athfield Architects Ltd professionally in 1998, becoming an Associate in 2002 and Director in 2008. For the last 15 years Athfield has worked with the team to generate successful conceptual outputs and proposals by testing economic viability and test planning consenting or cultural frameworks. In doing so he has helped create some of the office’s more memorable projects. Athfield has specific responsibilities for design initiation and client liaison, and has considerable experience in collaboration, management and coordination of projects. He has particular interest and experience in projects combining adaptive re-use and refurbishment with new buildings of both small and large scale projects.Maurits Kelderman completed his architectural studies in 1993 and has since had significant experience working in all aspects of architectural design, contract documentation and administration. Kelderman has knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga, is a leader of Te Taha Tū Māori cultural group and has gained a Bachelor of Māori Performing Arts from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. He has been a design tutor at Unitec Department of Architecture since 2000 and holds a diploma in secondary teaching. In 2015, Kelderman completed a master's degree focusing on the modern interpretation of Whare Wānanga. He was awarded a New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal.—This event is presented in partnership between Objectspace and Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Auckland Branch.
