Memoria: Echoes & Transformations unites music and visual art in an evening of reflection, renewal, and subtle emotional transformation. Pianist Flavio Villani returns with a programme exploring how sound carries memory, reshapes emotion, and traces the quiet inner shifts that accompany deep listening. He is joined by acclaimed Aotearoa artist Star Gossage, whose projected artworks accompany the performance and extend its emotional landscape.
Bach-Busoni - Chaconne in D minor
In Memoriam Suite
Brahms - Rhapsody in B minor, Op.79 n.1
Brahms - Intermezzi Op.117
Cesar Franck - Prelude, Choral et Fugue
The first half pairs the vast expressive arc of Bach–Busoni’s Chaconne in D minor with the intimate reflections of Villani’s In Memoriam Suite, a cycle shaped during a period of personal introspection. Together, they create a dialogue between monumental architecture and small, transparent gestures of remembrance and renewal.
The second half moves toward the searching momentum of Brahms’s Rhapsody in B minor, Op.79 No.1 and the inward stillness of his Intermezzi Op.117, described by the composer as “the lullabies of my sorrows”. The programme concludes with Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue, whose luminous resolution brings the evening to a place of spiritual clarity.
Star Gossage’s paintings—rooted in tenderness, layered memory, and emotional transparency—echo the programme’s themes while offering their own independent voice. Following the performance, a selection of her works will be exhibited in the foyer, allowing audiences to step further into the conversation between sound and image.
