Mau Taiaha: Strength in Mind, Body & Wairua
Join us for an introduction to mau taiaha, the ancient Māori martial art of the taiaha, a traditional long staff weapon. Guided by Tarumai Kerehoma (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei), this one-hour session will explore the history, cultural significance & artistry of the taiaha through kōrero, live demonstration & with the opportunity to learn some safe beginner movements yourself.
Tarumai shares, “My inspiration other than my whānau is the past & the future.” Her teaching carries this philosophy, connecting participants to both the ancestral knowledge & the living practice of mau taiaha.
Across the session you’ll gain insight into the origins, symbolism & cultural role of the taiaha, experience the stances, movements & philosophies that strengthen mind, body & wairua. Take part in a supportive introduction to this treasured Māori practice. There will also be time for pātai, offering a deeper understanding of how mau taiaha continues to be practiced & celebrated today.
