Also known as Complex Lymphatic Therapy (CLT) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), the accredited Casley-Smith Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) course will teach you this and more and provide Professional Development.
How does Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) training differ to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) only training? DLT is a therapeutic protocol comprising 5 components of treatment which include: Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD); compression (bandaging/garments); skin care (and precautions); exercise and a home program including activity modification that are integral to each other for the best outcome for those with decongestive conditions. This training will allow you to broaden the scope of clients you can treat to include those who have had lymph node removal or damage including surgery and/or radiation for the treatment of cancer; those having multiple surgeries over a period of time where lymphatic pathways and nodes have been disrupted; clients suffering burns, crush fractures and degloving as well as general conditions like sinusitis, headache, acne, immobility, oedema from travel, fibromyalgia, pre and post-surgery like knee reconstruction and “just because”.
You can easily identify your client has swelling, but why and is it safe to treat “today”. You will learn how to differentiate oedema; how to evaluate a health history through investigative questioning; the nitty-gritty of contraindications; the ins and outs of DLT after cancer treatment; implementation of an individualised treatment plan; education for self-help.
Module A covers MLD, skin care, exercise (basic), a home program (activity modification). This includes prophylactic, reduction and maintenance of their lymphoedema. You will be given an awareness of compression including garments and bandaging. Module B, which you can do at a later date, covers bandaging, compression garments and complex cases. You will need to complete both Module A and Module B if you wish to be registered on the Australasian Lymphology Association and National Lymphoedema Practitioner Register. (check if you qualify - http://www.lymphoedema.org.au/the-register-updated/for-health-professionals/

Please note: classes are small. The training is intensive and it is not practical or fair on you to teach a large class on how to safely and effectively deliver decongestive lymphatic therapy as well as provide sequences in just a weekend for your clients who have cancer or other serious health conditions. This is more than just “moving fluid” and “gentle touch”. You will have the opportunity to work with clients with specific conditions and this hands-on approach will help cement your learning and give you the confidence to implement your training immediately. Private classes are available.
