Mark your calendars for this opportunity to be a part of something truly special. See you at the Co-CREATION SHOWCASE 2025!
Adhere to marae protocol – no food and drink on the ātea. Please manage this yourselves as people are always tempted to sit on the seats by the wharenui and eat there however that is the ātea.
Arrive half an hour before the pōhiri start time. The pōhiri does not wait for you. You cannot enter the wharenui later in the day for any kaupapa if you do not arrive in time for the pōhiri.
1. Assemble outside the tomokanga/waharoa (gate) and organise kaikōrero, (speakers) tākoha (gifts – usually money placed in an envelope and given to kaikōrero), kaiārahi (leading elder) and kaihakahoki-i-te-karanga (the woman/women who will return/answer the call from the hunga kāinga [local people]).
2. Move to the gate – women in the front, men at the back and sides.
3. It is important that you keep together, normally in an arrow formation, with your caller in the front.
4. Usually, the kaumātua and elder women of your group will stand at the front.
5. Stay together as a group when moving forward.
6. When the kaikaranga for the hunga kāinga gives her call, your ope will proceed to walk forward slowly on to the Marae atea. It is important that the ope stay close together as a group when walking onto the Marae – so if you have children they should be at your side.
7. The group walks into the mahau (porch) of the house where they remove their shoes. From there, they proceed through the middle of the whare, and the front people stop at an appropriate distance from the back wall, the tuarongo. A minute or so of silence is observed. When appropriate, the leader or men of the group deliver poroporoaki.
8. The manuhiri then hongi (press noses) with the tangata whenua, beginning from the taumata (the doorway) end of the whare towards the tuarongo (end inside wall). For Ngāpuhi-Nui-Tonu, the convention is one press of the nose. General salutations are murmured to each other at the hongi. Note that it is not a rubbing together of noses but rather a pressing together of noses. It is fine for you to place the left hand on the right shoulder of the person being greeted, as the two right hands are grasped during the harirū (handshake).
9. After the hongi, the manuhiri then sit on the seats or the mattresses especially allotted to them, which will be on the right-hand side of the whare facing towards the back wall (tarawhānui). Once seated, a short service may begin. The service may only be a karakia, or a hymn may precede or follow the karakia.
No videos of the karanga. Also advise them of the photo/video limitations within the wharenui that I have already mentioned to you – you cannot focus on a pou, there must be a living person in front.
Info: The master of ceremony for the day will be Dr Tia Reihana. Please arrive at 9am for the powhiri which will be at 9.30am.
