Conducted by Michael Jamieson, the band aims to give young musicians from year 7 to university age opportunities to play with other musical students from across Auckland, especially when players may not have the chance to play in musical ensembles at their schools.

The AYSB regularly performs in collaboration with the Auckland Wind Orchestra, and over the last few years has played for the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, the NZ Yorkshire Society, and has achieved Silver awards at the New Zealand National Concert Band Festival in 2019, 2021, and 2023, as well as a Gold award in the NZCBA Festival in 2022.
