Earlier this year, Terry went in for routine testing through the fire department, where doctors identified Barrett’s esophagus — a condition in which the lining of the esophagus changes after long-term acid exposure. While Barrett’s isn’t cancer on its own, it increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer.  Additional testing confirmed he did have esophageal cancer.

Thankfully, the cancer was caught early. In August, doctors were able to remove a small tumor, about the size of a cherry. However, cancer cells were still detected in the surrounding area, leading Terry into an aggressive treatment plan. Over the past five weeks, he has completed 23 rounds of radiation and 5 rounds of chemotherapy. 

Terry is now entering a six-week recuperation period before his next major step: an esophagectomy surgery, scheduled for January 5. An esophagectomy is a complex, roughly eight-hour procedure in which surgeons remove the diseased portion of the esophagus and reconstruct a new pathway using his stomach so he can continue to swallow and eat normally. It’s a major surgery, but an essential part of removing any remaining cancer and giving him the best path toward recovery.

Through it all, Terry has shown remarkable courage and unwavering spirit. This event is our opportunity to rally around him, support his journey, and stand beside the Winslow family as they face the road ahead with hope and strength.
