In Conversation with Kiese Laymon

Kiese Laymon is a celebrated Black Southern writer and professor from Jackson, Mississippi, known for his powerful explorations of race, family, identity, and American life. He currently teaches English and creative writing and has been honored with a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (“Genius Grant”) for his contributions to literature and cultural thought.

Laymon’s work spans fiction, essays, and memoir:

"Long Division" is a genre-bending novel that blends speculative elements with a coming-of-age story rooted in Mississippi.

"How to Slowly K*ll Yourself and Others in America" is a powerful collection of essays confronting race, culture, and personal history, praised as a notable book by The New York Times.

"Heavy: An American Memoir" is his widely acclaimed memoir that examines his upbringing, family dynamics, and the weight of systemic racism in the U.S.; it has earned multiple awards and was named one of the best memoirs of recent decades.
