Want To Learn How To Write A Song?
I've been writing songs for decades. People have so often asked me how I go about writing a song. So, I decided it might be a good idea to teach a class in basic songwriting.
While it’s beneficial if you can play an instrument, if you can hum or whistle a tune and write phrases or sentences then you can write a song. Why don’t you need to be able to play an instrument to write a song? Because the essential parts of a song, the parts that comprise the core of the song, are its melody (single note lines that can be sung) and its lyrics (words). The rest are arraignment, instrumentation, harmony and a ton of other things that are often added to the melody and lyrics for a full-on recording, but the basic elements are the words, and the tune used to sing them. “Songwriting For Beginners” will be held at the Au Sable Forks Free Library on five successive Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:30pm starting on October 29th. It’s FREE, but class size is limited so you need to email me at

The class can be applied to any style of music whatsoever.
The goal is for you to leave class with one song that is either finished or well on its way, and the knowledge to continue songwriting from there on…
All you need to bring is yourself and something to take notes with and on (pen and paper, computer, whatever works for you), and a willingness to try in a non-judgmental, non-competitive setting. If you play a guitar, bring it. There are keyboards at the library.
