All options will be explained at Isehara Station, but I recommend deciding to run on the long road from Isehara (Robert), or hooking up with Cowboy for the Tsurumaki Onsen Course on trails.
Start Options:
1. Meet at the station at 8:55 and run to the top of the cable car.
2. Meet at the station at 8:55 and take the bus to the top of the cable car (saving about 8K and lots of road uphill)
Finish Options:
1. Run up and down the peak and take the bus from the cable car to Isehara Station.
2. Run up and down the peak and run to Tsurumaki Onsen Station for a warm bath and a very nice descent trail run (to be guided by Cowboy).
3. Run up and down the peak and run along the 8K road to Isehara Station (self-guided)
Annual New Year's run from Isehara Station to the peak of Oyama. Bust a lung as buses and cable cars wiz past you until the top of the ropeway, from where a steep climb takes you to the beautiful (but likely cold) summit. Warm up with warm snack at the top of the ropeway.
Feel free to return to the station by bus, though a few hardcore idiots usually run all the way back down the road (an extra 8K) with or without bags of mikan in their running packs. It's about 13K to the summit in total from Isehara, 4K back down to the ropeway (and return bus) or a solid 24K for the entire grind back to Isehara.
You have a more pleasant and interested option available to run with Cowboy (to be explained on the event day). This is NOT an easy course, but has more trails and avoids the road grind.
There are lockers at Isehara for storing warm gear.
Safety Note (Important!):
- We have had a few instances of runners becoming dangerously cold on the summit of Oyama. It will likely be below zero and you will be wet and sweaty from the long approach run. You MUST bring the following gear:
Shell jacket or wind breaker
Fleece or other warm jacket
Gloves
Tights (NOT SHORTS)
Warm hat
Optional: Neck Warmer
- One downhill section between the top of Oyama and Miharashidai (見晴台), please don’t run and pass hikers.
(For those runners who do NOT want to start on the road at Isehara, NO PROBLEM! Just take the bus to the cable car and meet us at the cable car bus station. You will save about 8K of road).
Note that Team Cowboy does less road and more trail.
