Event Description
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training is a FEMA-developed course that prepares everyday citizens to safely help themselves, their families, and their neighbors during the critical first 72 hours after a disaster—when professional responders may not yet be available.
This two-part CERT Basic course follows the national CERT curriculum used across the United States and is hosted by the Tipton County CERT Team.
Part 1 introduces the foundations of disaster response, emphasizing personal safety, organization, and preparedness.
Topics in Part 1 include:
• Disaster preparedness: identifying hazards, building family plans, and assembling disaster “go kits”
• Fire safety: basic fire suppression, fire extinguisher use, and identifying utility hazards
• Disaster medical operations (Part I): bleeding control, shock treatment, and basic triage
• CERT organization: how teams function safely and effectively
The course combines classroom instruction, videos, discussion, and practical demonstrations. No prior experience is required. This training is open to the public.
Important: Participants must attend both Part 1 (March 7) and Part 2 (March 14) to complete CERT Basic Training.
