About the event

Speaker Series: Tony Giarrusso - City of Atlanta 2025 Tree Canopy Update
Atlanta’s trees purify our air, cool our homes with shade, absorb stormwater, store carbon, and strengthen our city’s climate resilience. Atlanta has long been recognized for having one of the highest percentages of urban tree canopy in the nation among cities that have conducted Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) assessments. For over a decade, Tony Giarrusso along with Georgia Institute of Technology has been studying Atlanta's trees. Join us as he shares the findings of Atlanta’s 2025 Tree Canopy Assessment Report and discusses how the city is progressing in its efforts to protect and preserve our urban forest.

About the Speaker: Tony Giarrusso is a Senior Research Scientist and Associate Director of the Center for Urban Resilience and Analytics in the College of Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga. His teaching, research, and consulting activities focus on GIS-based planning solutions for land conservation, coastal and marine resource management, urban planning and environmental protection. Over the past twenty-four years, Mr. Giarrusso has been Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on more than 30 research projects, with research sponsors including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the State of Georgia (DNR and DHR), The Nature Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, Morehouse School of Medicine, The Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund International, and the City of Atlanta. Apart from his research activities, Mr. Giarrusso has been an instructor at Georgia Tech for the last twenty-one years, primarily teaching introductory GIS classes to undergraduates.

City Forest Certification: The City Forest Certification is Trees Atlanta’s newest community action program. This hands on program is designed to guide and empower everyday people with practical knowledge and skills. Neighbor by neighbor and property by property, we can grow and connect a network of forests big and small. By attending this program you can earn 1 Acorn towards your City Forest Certification
