Roy Ayers, The King of Vibes and God Father of Neo-Soul, returns to Atlanta MLK Weekend at the City Winery. Ayers continues to tour the U.S., South Africa and Europe playing all of his top hits like "Searching" and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine." Ayers' history with Atlanta, of course, goes back years as a headliner for multiple festivals including the Atlanta Jazz Festival, the National Black Arts Festival and so many more.
What many folks don't know, is that Roy Ayers along with Stevie Wonder and Gil Scott Heron were also amongst the musical activists that also lobbied aggressively in favor of the eventual national adoption of Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday as a national holiday. In 2011, he was awarded with the Racial Equality Ambassador Award.
His musical collaborations span the gamut including Fela Kuti, Rick James, GURU Jazzmatazz, and Masters At Work with Louie Vega and Kenny Dope Gonzalez. Music royalty Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, Erykah Badu are just a few that list him as a musical influence. His catalog also has him ranked among the most sampled artists in the Hip Hop community.
January 15 & 16, Roy Ayers with music director Mark Adams and a special group of Atlanta based friends celebrate history and culture through music. Special guest Latrese Bush and others on vocals. Members of The Common Ground Collective in the groove for support. DJs Salah Ananse and Daz I-Kue set the atmosphere when doors open at 6 pm.
