As dusk settles over Constitution Lakes Park's wetlands, floodplain forests, and quiet waters, we'll tune into the chorus of amphibians that call this remarkable ecosystem home.DeKalb County is home to a rich diversity of frogs and toads. While we won't cover them all, we'll focus on a select handful of species to hone our listening skills, build confidence in identification, and gain a better understanding of what amphibian monitoring can look and feel like.Inspired by regional amphibian monitoring efforts, this series begins with listening. Before meaningful data can be collected, we first need to develop our ears, sharpen our observation skills, and experience how frog activity changes from park to park and season to season. River Industrial Boulevard SEAtlanta, GA 30315Please meet at the semi-circular stone seating area near the main trailhead. We'll begin with a brief introduction before heading into the wetlands.What to BringWear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy walking shoes suitable for natural surface trails with exposed roots and uneven terrain.Participants are encouraged to bring:• Flashlight or headlamp (red-light mode preferred if available)• Refillable water bottle• Phone for notes (optional)• Curiosity and a willingness to listen, observe, and contributeWhat We'll DoMoving at a slow, intentional pace, we'll pause at several listening locations throughout the park to experience the nighttime soundscape.Participants will:• Practice identifying frog calls through guided listening• Learn to distinguish a handful of common species by sound• Explore why frogs call and what those calls communicate• Begin connecting frog calls with habitat and behavior• Experience the first steps toward community-based amphibian monitoringWe'll divide our time between stillness and movement, allowing the landscape to reveal itself as we tune in more deeply.You Will Leave With• Foundational frog call recognition skills• Greater confidence identifying common local species• A deeper appreciation for Constitution Lakes Park after dark• An introduction to amphibian monitoring practices• A renewed sense of curiosity about the hidden sounds of natureDogsTo help everyone hear frog calls and minimize disturbance to wildlife, this program is not appropriate for dogs. Please leave your furry friends at home.Walking Distance / Physical Activity LevelThis program includes approximately 1–1.5 miles of slow-paced walking along natural surface trails with exposed roots, rocks, occasional uneven terrain, and boardwalk sections.Frequent stops will be made for listening and observation. Participants should be comfortable standing quietly for short periods and walking in low-light conditions.Trail Surface & AccessibilityThis program follows natural surface trails and boardwalks with exposed roots, uneven terrain, and occasional elevation changes.
