- **Event Description**: In celebration of Women's History Month, The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum will host a talk by Atlanta-based public historian Hermina Glass-Hill. The topic of her discussion will be Civil War nurse, teacher, and heroine of freedom Susie King Taylor, born enslaved in 1862 near Savannah, Georgia, from the age of seven to thirteen, she attends secret schools learning to sufficiently read and write, she flees the Grest Plantation and runs to the safety of the Union Army where she becomes a Civil War nurse, cook, laundress, and the first African American teacher in the state of Georgia teaching runaway slaves and soldiers of the first black U.S. regiment to read and write. After the war, she opens a school. She eventually migrates to Boston, MA where she writes and self-publishes her autobiography, "Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd United States Colored Troops."
