- **Event Name**: Author Talk: PHILL BRANCH
- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 23 Jun, 2026 at 06:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Emmy Award-winning producer, writer, and director Phill Branch discusses his new memoir, "The Double Dutch Fuss".

In this honest and lyrical book, Branch explores his struggle to break free from the strict expectations of Blackness and masculinity that have shaped his life. Growing up under the watchful eye of a father, a charismatic Army veteran, Branch felt different and often defective in his father's eyes. His experiences, including being punished for playing jump rope with girls, illustrated the rigid codes of behavior imposed on him.

Branch shares his journey from Newark, New Jersey, to Los Angeles, confronting the complexities of being the queer Black son of a complicated father. He reflects on early inappropriate relationships, his successful rebranding at Hampton University, and the stark realities of Hollywood life as a struggling writer.

"The Double Dutch Fuss" delves into the burdens of expectation, to be a boy, to be Black, and to be queer—while addressing the fears of emotional and physical violence. The branch examines the deep connections between fathers and sons and how healing past wounds can lead to freedom. His narrative is an insightful and often humorous exploration of identity, masculinity, and the radical act of choosing to live authentically.

The Author Talk is moderated by Jon Goode.
