Ron Hsu is the culinary director and a partner in his Michelin-starred restaurant, Lazy Betty, in Atlanta, Georgia. His upbringing in a restaurant family led him to become a leader in New Yorkβs culinary industry as the executive chef of Le Colonial and the creative director of Eric Ripertβs three-Michelin-starred Le Bernardin. Beyond the restaurants, Hsu was featured on the Netflix cooking series The Final Table. He is involved with several nonprofits, including Raise: High Road Restaurants, an advocacy group dedicated to fair wages and racial and gender equity in the restaurant industry as well as Kulture City, which creates sensory accessibility and inclusion for those with invisible disabilities.
In his debut cookbook, Down South + East: A Chinese American Cookbook , he shares the food he cooks at home, inspired by his Chinese roots, his childhood in the American South, and his restaurant training. With mouthwatering ingredient combinations, his comforting-yet-creative recipes include Claypot Rice with Okra and Smoked Ham Hocks, Pickled Gulf Shrimp with Coconut Milk, Meatloaf with Shiitake Mushrooms, Pimiento Cheese Wontons, Cornmeal-Crusted Fried Chinese Eggplant, and Lap Cheong Cornbread made with deeply flavored Chinese sausage, all of which offer a fresh, boldly flavorful take on Southern food.
