"description": "By way of Philadelphia, John Cuie is a filmmaker and the founder of the American Visionaries Film Festival, which he launched in 2025. Cuie has produced several short films, including Color Karma (2023), which he directed and in which he portrays a Black Republican attorney opposed to reparations for Black Americans. In the film, his character has an out-of-body experience where his ancestor reveals his untold history, leading to a profound transformation in his beliefs.Cuie worked on a Pepsi commercial, Pepsi Dig-in: FoodChasers, featuring Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts, which highlighted small business Black-owned restaurants. Cuie served as the right-hand assistant to the commercial's director, Adam Green, learning the ins and outs of directing a professional commercial shoot.Cuie counts Barry Jenkins as his favorite and most influential filmmaker, especially for the film Medicine for Melancholy. The film, produced on a $10,000 budget, demonstrated to Cuie that you don’t need a mega-million-dollar budget to tell rich stories. Cuie also admires the film’s use of color, timing, and poetic cinematography — very minimal yet elegant.Cuie is currently working on a compelling docu-drama film that incorporates themes of Black history and a connection to ancestors in ways that have never been seen before on film."
