We must never lose sight of the key role which coal-mining played in Westhoughton's history for well over two centuries. With various aspects of the Pretoria Pit disaster being fixtures in our annual programme, this is unlikely to happen.
As the 115th anniversary of Westhoughton's darkest day approaches, it is appropriate to welcome Alan Davies once again; a WLHG member who is arguably Britain's leading authority on Pretoria, he will remind us of the important but frequently forgotten role played by women locally in the coal mining industry.
