- **Event Description**: The Great Locomotive Chase of 1862, Andrews’ Raid
“the boldest adventure of the war”

This is a true story, also known as the Andrews' Raid. It was a military raid that began in early April shortly after the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, in 1862. In the space of 97 miles in northwestern Georgia Union Army volunteers, led by civilian James J. Andrews, commandeered Western & Atlantic Railroad's locomotive General with her train.

Several books were written at the time of the raid, and well after. The most well-known by one of the raiders, William Pittenger, titled Daring and Suffering” in 1863, and later revised it two times.
You don’t have to be a civil war historian or even a railroad enthusiast to enjoy this real folk tale in America’s history.

This program is storytelling, history and human emotion that can appeal to anybody with an interest in our heritage, and it’s all about trains too!

For your entertainment and education on this matter, General of the Army, US Grant will share the war department’s reported information with a large easel map and several photos of the trains involved, and tell you the story of The Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.
