- **Event Description**: ANNOUNCEMENT:
Two of this weekend’s four performances of “Now We Juke-ing! A Juke Joint Story” are postponed due to severe weather forecast. Thursday January 22 and Friday January 23 performances will proceed as planned, while the Saturday January 24 and Sunday January 25 performances are postponed to Saturday January 31 and Sunday February 1 respectively.

Tickets sold for both the Saturday and Sunday shows will be automatically transferred to the rescheduled show on the corresponding weekday. The rescheduled Saturday January 31 performance will still include catering by Neutral Grounds.

Current and prospective ticket holders should visit athensartscouncil.org/nwj-postponement for any action required and guidance on how to purchase tickets. ACT has added an additional “Pay What You Can” rehearsal on Friday January 31 as a result of high demand for tickets and this altered schedule. Online tickets are no longer available; patrons must call or visit The Arts Center to purchase tickets.

"Now We Juke-ing!" (Rated PG-13) is written and directed by Cynthia McCowan, who also wrote and directed 2024's "Hot Comb, Honey?" McCowan regularly lends her voice and talent to our House Blend Concert Series, such as last season’s "90s Prom" and "‘67-71’ Music of a Changing World," and has performed in ACT shows "Having Our Say" and "To K*ll a Mockingbird."

The cast includes ACT alums Devin Arnwine as Young Cynthia, Crystal Hall as Gertrude, Ava Hall as Young Cynthia, and Daelyn Waldroup as Margie. They are joined by returning ACT performers Kayla Anderson as Sophia, Audrea Armstrong as Ms. Marthie, and Stacy Ferguson as Ms. Chaney and Ms. Eula Lee. ACT is proud to welcome Jarret Brown as Halo and Shug and Larry "Dobie" McMahan as Willearl, who are making their ACT debut. Other performers in the show are Elijah Benson, Precious Brown, Christian Edwards, Jim Kirkland, and Bonita Montgomery.

The production is supported by stage manager and assistant director, Heidi King. Now We Juke-ing! is produced by Lauren Brown.

Now We Juke-ing! A Juke Joint Story tells real-life stories of how growing up in North Mississippi juke joints shaped the cultural perspective of a young Black girl.

Now We Juke-ing! is the next installment of the Athens Community Theatre 2025 - 26 Dessert Series. Show dates and times are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, January 22 - 24, at 7:00 PM, and Sunday, January 25, at 2:00 PM.

Tickets are on sale now, and patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early, as ACT events tend to sell out on, or before, the performance date.

Ticket pricing varies due to catering and a “Pay What You Can Option.”

For this production, the opening night performance on Thursday January 22 will double as a “Pay What You Can” performance. Patrons may pay the regular ticket price ($20 for adults and $15 for students) or select a free ticket and make a donation of any amount.

Friday January 23 and Saturday January 24 are catered shows, meaning there is one flat ticket price for each show. Friday January 23 is catered by The Island Vibe whose Maxene Thomas, also known as Chef Fullflava, will serve his award-winning gumbo along with pineapple cupcakes. Neutral Ground will cater the Saturday January 24 performance with Chef Kenyaetta Ashford serving seafood gumbo and a dessert. (There will be a gumbo without shellfish as well.) The $25 ticket for each of these dates includes the meal, the show, and access to a cash bar.

Tickets for the Sunday January 25 matinee are standard pricing.

Athens Area Council for the Arts is committed to helping eliminate barriers to arts experiences. While Athens Community Theatre is an important source of revenue for AACA programs, the organization understands ticket prices can be prohibitive and offers a “Pay What You Can Option” for most theatrical productions. This Pay What You Can option is generally during a rehearsal and is publicized by word of mouth.

Athens Community Theatre Dessert Series that presents patrons with experimental, thought-provoking, and sometimes decadent theatre that is definitely better after dinner. Unless otherwise noted, all ACT Dessert Series Productions take place in the Willson Family Theater in the Peggy Dow Performance Center at The Arts Center.
