About the event

Lecture: “2.5D: Scanning Flat Objects in Detail”
Join Jorge Cano (head of research and development at Factum Arte and Factum Foundation) and Pedro Miró (3D senior specialist and project manager at Factum Foundation) for a talk on the Selene Photometric Stereo System. Created by the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation, Selene was designed to meet the urgent need for high-resolution, non-invasive recording methods in cultural heritage. Its ability to capture surface depth via light has introduced a new dimension to conservation and research. Selene employs photometric stereo imaging, capturing multiple 2D images under varying lighting angles to generate highly detailed texture and surface relief data at resolutions up to 1,000 dpi. By combining color with precise surface measurements, Selene reveals subtle details — such as tool marks, surface wear and hidden features — that remain invisible to both the naked eye and conventional photography. Engineered to work safely with sensitive materials, Selene is capable of digitizing large flat or semi-flat objects, including copper plates, manuscripts, paintings and mural surfaces, with exceptional fidelity.

The Georgia Museum of Art now has a Selene Photometric Stereo System on-site for use with University of Georgia classes and to study its collection. Cano and Miró will scan objects from the collection earlier in the week, then present the results in this public talk.
