Skrobanska was drawn to create art from wool 15 years ago. Initially a fashion designer, she made clothes with felted elements like flowers and with abstract designs bringing uniqueness to her creations. In the last nine years, she started exploring a new field of art by making pictures from wet felt wool. She literally “paints” by stacking layer upon layer of colored fibers that include marino wool, silk, and viscose.
She explains: “I am deeply fascinated by how vibrant wool art is and how interesting it is to manipulate these fibers into a wide spectrum of possibilities: from 3-D flowers, landscapes, and animals to vivid abstractions. My art is an effort to explore the interconnectedness of all things as exemplified by the wool fibers themselves.”
Skrobanska says her inspiration comes from the Universe. “Albert Einstein said it best; ‘A human being is a part of the whole, called by us Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical illusion of his consciousness. This illusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to personal desires and affection for the few people nearest to us.”
She believes we can free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. “Nobody is able to achieve this completely,” Skrobanska said, “but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
Iliyana Skrobanska was born and raised in Bulgaria. She graduated from the Technical University in Sofia as an engineer in textile machines with a minor in fashion design. She founded Dixon's LTD in 1994 and worked as its CEO through 2014. The company produced fashion clothes for different boutiques in Sofia. At that time she was attracted to the felting process and started making unique clothes made from wool. She moved to the USA in 2014, and began "painting" with wool. She is now a full time artist, exhibiting and selling her work across the country.
