- **Event Description**: This year, we’re taking the Dusty, Alberta's oldest bugle-assisted gravel event, to new territory: the Tawatinaw Valley, just south of Athabasca.

If you’ve never ridden gravel up that way, you’re in for a treat. Much of the route we’ve put together follows sections of the original Athabasca Landing Trail, an old wagon route connecting the town of Athabasca and Fort Saskatchewan.

Our starting point is Perryvale, Alberta, about a 90-minute drive north of Edmonton. The route is a figure eight. We begin with a 57-km loop to the south that brings us back to Perryvale. That will be enough for some folks. The second loop, to the north, includes some adventure: a 5-km off-road section along a grass double track through the forest along the old Trans-Canada Trail that will likely require negotiating some fallen trees. In between the two loops will be Alberta’s first gravel-ride pranza (Italian for “lunch”). 

Park across from the Perryvale Country Store. There's a rustic outhouse in the little park. The store has limited offerings, but you can count on cold drinks, ice-cream sandwiches, and perhaps a vintage can of Chef Boyardee. The only other store along the route is in Rochester at km 43 of the southern loop.

So, about this pranza . . . . Participants in the ride are invited to take part in a potluck picnic at the Perryvale park at noon, following the first loop. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on while we share food and drink–picnic space is copious. There may even be a bugle serenade. Post-pranza, some folks will head home while others will head out for the northern loop.

Because we want all riders to be back at Perryvale for the noon pranza, the start time for the event will be up to you. There’s no official Dusty bugle call to start this ride. If you think the 57k of the first loop will take you about three hours, then a 9 am start time makes sense. Faster riders can sleep in a bit and start later.

No registration fee. All are welcome: gravel lovers, the gravel-curious, and anyone up for a dusty adventure. But come prepared to feed a few of your fellow riders a non-refrigerated dish.
