Hi and welcome to the first e-blast from Gateway DanceSport Festivals East & West. Hopefully you had a great Holiday Season and that 2020 is starting out with a dance bang.
In 2020 there will be two Gateways – Gateway DanceSport Festival East (NY) and Gateway DanceSport Festival West (CA), taking place on the opposite sides of the country, and at opposite seasons of the year. Both competitions will be based on the philosophy that competitions should be fun and affordable for all.
What makes the Gateway competitions different? Both are all inclusive and welcome non-traditional couples in addition to traditional couples. The regular Ballroom and Latin competition dances will be offered, as well as some of the other, rarely offered partnership dances including Lindy, Jitterbug, East & West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango Nuevo, and Hustle. Who leads and who follows is unimportant. In fact, switching lead and follow is allowed and can be part of the fun! In addition to the usual judging criteria of footwork, partnering, musicality, presentation, and overall look, an additional criterion will be showing that you are having fun.
The organizers of the Gateway competitions are Daphna Locker, Sandi Wollin, and Bob Arthur. Daphna is a long-time ballroom competitor, having danced Pro/Am, Am/Am, and Same-Sex. She was also the main organizer of USA Dance Nationals from 2007 - 2015, and of the Manhattan Amateur Classic (MAC) for over 20 years. In 2019, she branched out to run her own competition, Gateway DanceSport Festival, which was the first all-inclusive dancesport competition in the United States. 2020 will be the second year for Gateway.
Sandi was one of the original co-founders of MAC in 1990 (1st MAC 30 years ago.) She comes from a ballroom family & her first pair of dance shoes was baby size 1. As a child, she learned ballroom at her parents’ feet and learned Peabody from Mr. Johnny Lucchesi (Mr. Peabody.) Her amateur career took her to England where she studied for many years. After a successful amateur career, Sandi became a professional in 1999, and since then has been coaching Ballroom, Latin and of course, her specialty, Peabody. She currently works as a coach in Palm Springs, CA and as an Emcee, DJ, and Scrutineer at many competitions across the west coast. After many years away from organizing competitions, Sandi decided that it was time to return to organizing and joined Daphna and Bob to organize Gateway West.
Bob Arthur started dancing in 1998 at an Arthur Murray studio after watching “Dirty Dancing.” After moving to Florida in 2002, he began DJ’ing for community centers, private clubs, parties, and social dances. In addition, he was the DJ for USA Dance chapter dances, and his own ballroom dances. Since moving to California, he and Sandi have worked for numerous competitions in California.
