# Event Details - **Event Name**: The Florida Grasshopper Sparrow: Natural History, Decline, and Recovery of Florida's sparrow - **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 13 Dec, 2025 at 05:00 pm - **Event Description**: Elusive, endemic, and critically endangered; meet our state's very own grassland songbird, the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow! These ground nesting birds face a multitude of threats, including invasive fire ants, flooding, and habitat loss, and their conservation story is one of resilience, creativity, and collaboration. From building predator exclusion fences around nests, to creating a conservation breeding program, people and agencies from across the state are stepping in to recover the species, which has been in decline since the 1980s and now numbers less than 200. Mary and Alex Marine will dig into the history of the species, where we are, and where we hope to be headed in the recovery journey of the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow. Mary and Alex Marine are Wildlife Biologists and avid birders who both currently lead Florida Grasshopper Sparrow field work with Archbold Biological Station and the Florida Wildlife Commission, respectively. They met in college and share a passion for endangered species conservation, which led them to the sparrows they now work to protect. They both enjoy wildlife photography and traveling within the ABA and abroad for birds. This talk is the Saturday keynote for the NORTH SHORE BIRDING FESTIVAL and is held at Wekiwa Springs State Park in the Youth Camp dining hall, along with a delicious dinner from Krazy Greek Cafe. Cost is $35 plus park admission of $4 single, $6 per car. Must enter the park through the main gate before it closes at 5:30. Dinner served at 5pm, talk at 5:30 pm. Plan to do another afternoon walk at the park as part of the festival or go kayaking on the beautiful Wekiva River.
