Animal research is a contentious, emotionally charged subject in both the scientific and general communities.  It is essential that our animal models accurately and consistently depict intended qualities, which is why student volunteers in the Ottem laboratory at Northern Michigan University became concerned when mice with small, artificially inserted pieces of DNA depicted unexpected anxiety-like behaviors.  We performed a series of noninvasive behavioral tests to formally assess these abnormalities, building a framework that may be used to “troubleshoot” anomalies in research animals while exploring the future of biomedical research.

Marissa is a Washburn native who considers herself a lifelong learner, a health and wellness advocate, and professional adventurer.  With a B.S. in general biology, an almost-completed M.S. in biology (neuroscience concentration), and significant experience teaching anatomy and physiology, she is excited to present her research to her home community.  When not hiking with her dog, Marissa works with older adults in nursing homes, teaches Silver Sneakers classes, and intends to work with seniors as an occupational therapist as a long-term career.  

Science on Tap happens every third Tuesday of the month at the Alley Restaurant in Ashland. There's a 30-45 minute presentation from a speaker followed by an audience Q&A. We recommend arriving early to secure your beverage/food and a seat.
