The memorial commemorates the remarkable freedom-seeking journey of Asbury Parker, who escaped slavery at nearby Clinton Furnace in 1857. After crossing the Ohio River near present-day Huntington, West Virginia, Parker received assistance from Underground Railroad networks in Ohio before ultimately reaching freedom in Canada.

Developed through a partnership between Boyd County Parks and Recreation, Shawnee State University’s Center for Public History, and Randy Stapleton Masonry, the memorial is located at the entrance to ARMCO Park and is built as a scale model of the now-demolished Clinton Furnace stack where Parker had been enslaved.

The marker is part of the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour, a multi-state initiative documenting verified Underground Railroad sites throughout Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tourism Initiative is made possible in part by a POWER Grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and is led by the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation.
